The founding of caravaningsuisse, the «Schweizerischer Caravan­gewerbe-Verband», dates back to the organization of the first «Schweizer Caravan Salon» in 1963 in Zurich.

In 1964, the Swiss association became a founding member of the European Caravan Federation (ECF).

In the early 1970s, the Schweizer Caravan Salon was moved to Bern, where the exhibition developed into Switzerland's only national camping and caravanning fair. With the name evolving into Suisse Caravan Salon, the exhibition, organized by caravaningsuisse in Bern, has strengthened this national claim since the late 1990s. The exhibition is organized in close cooperation with today's Bernexpo AG, which, under the supervision of a parity-formed exhibition commission, largely handles the organization and management.

Caravaningsuisse primarily comprises companies engaged in the trade of recreational vehicles, motorhomes, and caravans. It also includes those involved in areas such as rentals and repairs or in the distribution of relevant camping accessories, such as awnings.

The association organizes specialized training and educational courses for employees of member companies.

Regular gas inspections of motorhomes and caravans are required every three years in Switzerland. To conduct these inspections, one must have passed the gas inspector exam CSV (Caravan, Ship, Event) administered by the Arbeitskreis LPG. Caravaningsuisse contributes a five-day training block out of the six training days required for certification.
